How to treat dogs infected with fleas

Fleas are everywhere, and their presence can not be completely hindered. So the control of the population of flea is of utmost importance in looking after our pets in healthy condition. In this case flea medication is more valuable than any other products available in the veterinary market.

A pet can identify whether it is infected with fleas or not. The affected dog shows symptoms of scratching. It is due to the crawling about of the fleas from any other place into the dog’ body surface. An affected dog always gets irritated by taking bites on its surface trying to get rid of them. If it is left unattended the dog scratch its body all over against any object like the furniture or chair or even against the object we are keeping to use for emergency purpose. Flea allergy dermatitis in some dogs as a result of Flea bites make the affected dog bite every where it can on its body in order to get rid of the itching fleas. As they bite their skin so hard that sometimes wound may develop leading to other secondary disease. It leads to allergic reaction, later difficult to be cured. The dog showing flea allergy dermatitis can be given complete relief by applying flea drops. It may be placed at the top of the neck. Use of once in a month is enough. If it is comparatively larger dog the application may be divided on the neck and lower side of the base of the tail. There are three known products available in market. They are Advantage, Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix. These drugs are best available. Adult fleas and hatching fleas are destroyed effectively. This medicine will act on the surface for about 30 days. Spot on application of drugs are now available, which can kill adult fleas instantaneously.

There are drugs containing insect growth regulators in the form of pills. The parasitic insecticides containing in them can kill efficiently the fleas when they hatch, at the same time they can not kill the adult fleas. It is most advantageous if used in combination with Advantage or Frontline Plus, thus killing both adult fleas and hatching fleas. A heartworm preventive medicine is Sentinel which can kill a variety of worms such as whip worms, round worms, hook worms and tape worms.

Topic flea medication for dogs is more advantageous because it can be used once in a month. Frontline even though expensive is good in eradicating ticks. When topical medication is applied, brand rotation is a good practice to hinder the growth of fleas effectively. Capstar is a new one used orally for canines, used as one time application, capable of killing any fleas efficiently.
