Ferret Treats – Are These Items Good Or Bad For Ferrets?

Ferret treats are like forms of incentive for ferrets. Their usual affinity with sweets makes the idea quite challenging for owners. Some even use ferret treats as mere reward for their pets. As owners, it is very likely that we find our pet fun and entertaining. Their cute antics always encourage us to be more appreciative of them. It is also a delight seeing these ferrets playing. Nipping and biting are even considered as their way of showing affection and concern. But are ferret treat bad or good for ferrets?

To determine whether these items are great sources or simply bad treats to begin with, it helps to understand the following guidelines and reminders:

1. Ferret treats are naturally given to ferrets but not on a regular basis. Moderation should be followed when giving these items to our pets. For one thing, ferrets are obligate carnivores and their primary diet comprises of meat.

2. Since their very nature is restrictive, it also means that meat should form part of their daily diet. On the other hand, you can still choose other food sources to meet your pet’s health requirements.

It is also true that ferrets in the wild do survive by simply sustaining a meat-based diet. In fact, aside from the meat itself, ferrets are likely to eat every part of their prey. However, such raw diets cannot be given solely, especially to domestic ferrets.

3. So, what is really the real deal behind ferret treats? Are these sources beneficial to our pets? The answer is always relative. Basically, our ferrets can live even without these treats. One obvious reason is the lack of nutrients. Second, ferret treats are possible causes of health illnesses and diseases. Third, if given excessively, these ferret treats including raisins, can likely cause tooth decay and obesity.

4. It is also understandable that domestic ferrets are very different as compared to wild ferrets. Not only are they relying on their owners for food, but their diets cannot be simplified into just giving pure, raw diets. So, if you are thinking of giving ferret treats to your pet, you can actually do so provided that you limit the intake and monitor their feeding habits. Some great samples of suitable treats include eggs, baby foods that are meat-based and freeze-dried organ meat.

As always, it is best to remember that ferret treats are no substitutes for real ferret food. If you want to keep your pets healthy, following a natural and meat-based diet is the way to go and remains a priority.
