Precautions – Are You Careful With Your Pet? – Come This Spring
The spring is about to be upon us and as we get restless so do our pets. We have all spent more than enough time indoors this winter like us our pets have that pull to be outside with the sun shining.
There are some precautionary steps we should take with our pets as we take with ourselves. We protect ourselves when the temperatures rise so should our pets have protection against the rising temperatures of spring and the summer as well as other potential problems.
Our pets will need more water with the rising temperatures and being outdoors more. The idea is to keep them from getting de-hydrated so providing clean fresh water as much as possible. They will be more active now with the nice weather and require more water. You should by all means try to avoid your pets experiencing heat stroke and exhaustion which is the main idea of summer by keeping you pet as cool as possible.
It is a good idea to check your pet more for fleas and ticks as well with the warmer weather. The heat tends to bring this on more than usual and by checking your pet regularly especially if you see them scratching more than usual.
Please keep your pet on a leash or pay close attention to them at your side when out for a stroll. You have no idea who is now using or not using pesticides, fertilizers and insecticides on lawns and gardens which can be harmful to pets during the summer season. There are certain plants and flowers that may have been sprayed and could cause harmful effects to our pets if ingested.
You should avoid the temptation of taking your pet along with you on routine errands as trips to the post office, supermarket or other what you consider short term outings. These trips may seem harmful excursions but in the heat could be potential dangerous if left in the car.
Please keep in mind that your pet’s shots are required more now than ever especially if your pet is an outdoor pet. Rabies shots are required in the spring and should not be taken lightly with the incoming of natures animals to the town for food. Heartworm is another hazard to be take into consideration as it is more common in the summer with mosquitoes.
A pet owner should know their pet and how much exercise and activity they are capable of in the warmer temperatures. You should know your pet and what they are capable of in the high temperatures. You do not want to over exercise your dog or pet in the heat. It is better to choose the time of the day which is easier on your pet for outdoor activities.
You should always keep your pet in mind with the changing seasons as you change your activities and clothing so should you do so for your pet. They depend on you to make the decisions with them in mind.
